Spain: Breakthrough at tube-1 of Erjos tunnel construction in Canary Islands

    Drilling at Erjos tunnel's tube-1 in Tenerife has finished with the breakthrough after drilling 4885 meters. Parallel to it, excavation of tube-2 continues with 97% progress made so far write reports Canarian Weekly.

    Erjos Tunnel is a double-tube tunnel with each tube around 5km long. It is constructed by a joint venture of Fomento Construcciones y Contratas (FCC), El Silbo and Syocsa-Inarsa at a cost of 240.370.796. Excavation advanced 3-4 meters per day for each tube. Construction began in November 2019.

    When completed, Erjos tunnel will be the longest tunnel in the Canarias and one of the longest in Spain. The tunnel goes through the Teno massif and connect the south and the north of the island. Current travel time of 25-35 minutes between Santiago del Teide to El Tanque will decrease to 10 minutes.
