After his graduate at Delft University of Technology, Martijn Smitt, started his career in civil engineering & construction industry in 1993. In several functions  he contributed to a large variety of projects in The Netherlands as well as International. Currently appointed as Director Infra at Ballast Nedam.
Complex and multidisciplinary projects as well as immersed tunnelling are playing a key role in his career. Highlights in his career area are a large variety of (tunnel) projects in The Netherlands as well as  international projects. Such as the Wijker Tunnel in IJmuiden (NL), immersed tunnel at Schiphol Airport (NL) an undergound luggage handling system at Schiphol Airport, the Betuwe Railtrack tunnels (NL), the construction and immersion of the Caland Tunnel segments in the Rotterdam port area (NL), the design and immersion of the new Metroline IV, Prague in Czech Republic (CZ), the immersed tunnel in A73 Highway Roermond (NL),  the underground station and immersion of the tunnel segments under the Central Station and River IJ in Amsterdam (NL) as a part of the North / South Metroline. The immersed tunnel in Limmerick in Ireland (IRL), the Busan-Geoje Fixed Link project Korea (KOR), the Venice Flood barrier as part of the MOSE project (IT), the doubledecktunnel A2 in Maastricht (NL) and recently under construction the largest Sea Lock in the World in IJmuiden (NL), the Victory Boogie Woogie TBM driven tunnel The Hague (NL), The Fehmarnbelttunnel Denmark (DK) and Blankenburg Immersed Tunnel (NL).

The leading principle in the approach of the successful realization of complex projects for Martijn is having an excellent and detailed preparation applying custommade innovative techniques on risk management, project control and 3D design techniques and working with a dedicated and well experienced and trained team where people work with passion, using their hearts as their compasses and realize that “Failure is not an Option”.
