Netherlands decides against building a tunnel to the Ameland

Ameland.png

For a while there was an enthusiasm for constructing a tunnel link from the Dutch island of Ameland to the mainland. But the The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management of The Netherlands concludes that such a tunnel is not justified for economic reasons. For that reason, no more resources will be spent for investigating the feasibility of the tunnel.

Minister Cora van Nieuwenhuizen writes to the Dutch Parliament that, the tunnel would cost between 1.7 and 2 billion euros and building the tunnel is "a too complex implementation with very high investment and maintenance costs" that "cannot be justified with the projected limited number of transport movements". Instead of a tunnel, minister proposes improvements on the ferry harbour.

Many islanders were not very happy about the prospect of a tunnel either. I had posted about it in the past here.
