Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) get MHA approval to assign Shanghai Tunnelling Engineering Company (STEC) for building  two sewer water tunnels, almost 10km long between Borivli and Goregaon. Giving work to Chinese contractors is a sensitive issue in India, for some strategic projects.

Hindustan Times writes that the sewege tunnels are part of Mumbai Sewerage Disposal Project and will be connected to the wastewater treatment plant at Malad.

The big Indian contractor Larsen & Toubro (L&T) was among the 3 companies who wanted to do the work but BMC and Mumbai Sewage Disposal Project (MSDP) chose Chinese company. STEC will reuse the tunnel boring machine that it uses for the Metro-3 construction between Colaba and Aarey Colony.
