ACCIONA gives talk on TBM innovation at the World Tunnel Congress 2020
    09/23/2020

The Congress, which was originally going to be held in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), was finally held online from 11 to 17 September. It is the most important international specialist tunnels event.

Fernando Vara, Business Development Director for ACCIONA’s Railways and Tunnels specialised business unit, gave a technical talk entitled “Pre-grouting by a double shield TBM on the Follo Line Project (Oslo).”

ACCIONA sponsored the World Tunnel Congress (WTC) 2020, which this year was held online from 11 to 17 September due to the current situation,at which the company showcased its commitment to innovation and leadership in the tunnel construction sector.

The central theme for this edition of the Congress, which has become the most important international specialist tunnelling event, was “Innovation and Sustainable Underground Serving Global Connectivity”.The purpose of the Congress was to learn about the latest developments in innovation and major public tunnelling projects and sustainable development over the last fifty years.
Fernando Vara, Business Development Director for ACCIONA’s Railways and Tunnels specialised business unit, gave a technical talk during the week-long WTC entitled “Pre-grouting by a double shield TBM on the Follo Line Project (Oslo).”

In his talk, Fernando Vara explained how improvements in innovation and sustainability means that pre-grouting carried out by TBMs is now a feasible solution, even on highly complex underground projects, which is capable of minimising environmental risks and protecting the environment, while also achieving good productivity levels and optimising tunnel construction costs.

As an example of this success, Fernando Vara described the improvements made on the project to construct the Follo Line railway tunnels, which had extremely strict criteria to prevent any damage to the environment and the buildings located along the tunnels’ route.

These improvements implemented on the project that ACCIONA is carrying out in Norway include drilling platforms installed on the TBMs, systematic bore drilling to detect water leakage, designing injection formulas and equipment maintenance.

Thanks to these innovative technologies and its collaborative work, ACCIONA has managed to construct these railway tunnels efficiently and safely, minimising the environmental impact while encouraging sustainable urban development.

ACCIONA also presented other projects at the event, such as the Line 1 Quito Metro project (Ecuador) and the Dubai Metro (UAE), as successful examples of applying innovative solutions in underground projects.
    THE WORLD TUNNEL CONGRESS

The World Tunnel Congress, organised by the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA), is the most prestigious event in the tunnelling sector.
The 2019 addition, held in Naples (Italy), was attended by more than 1,500 engineers and professionals who every year highlight the latest trends and innovations and demonstrate the importance of tunnels for future sustainable cities.
