    Tunnelling Engineer- Birmingham/ Nottingham

    Arup is an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists offering a broad range of professional services. Through our work, we make a positive difference in the world.   

    We are a diverse team delivering major Tunnelling projects in the UK and across the globe for numerous Clients. In addition to supporting major infrastructure projects around the UK and Internationally, we are the leading office for Arup’s microtunnelling and existing tunnel asset capability. Our projects range from large diameter bored tunnels for road and rail to microtunnels (pipe jack) for gas, water and sewers and Horizontal Directional Drills (HDD) for offshore wind farms. The Solihull tunnelling team also provide assessment and advice on the appraisal and management of existing tunnels where we use state of the art digital survey techniques to inspect and assess these assets.

     

    We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual with a good knowledge of geology, geotechnical and tunnel design to join our Tunnels team. We have a strong future pipeline of committed work and our current projects include, for example, design and checking work on HS2 Phase 1, technical advice for Severn Trent Water (Derwent Valley and Elan Valley Aqueducts) and Cadent Gas (HS2 Phase 1 major gas diversions), the design of East Anglia Hub offshore windfarm HDDs and the decommissioning of London Power Tunnels 1 (LPT1).

     

    The Tunnelling discipline forms part of the Bridge, Civil Structures and Tunnels team which comprises over 50 engineers and technicians based in the Midlands Campus Office in Solihull near Birmingham. The tunnels team in Solihull includes six engineers who work closely with Arup’s global tunnel skills network. The Campus Office has nearly 750 staff in total, of which around 450 work on Infrastructure projects. The group works in a dynamic environment, enabling staff to sit within the group on Bridge, Civil Structures and Tunnel projects or relocate to work within multi-disciplinary project teams as required. Working in a totally digital environment, we have interesting projects at all stages of design development from Concept Design, through Feasibility Stages to Detailed Design, and undertake the management of existing structural assets. Our world leading infrastructure teams around the globe provide a wide technical and skills network, allowing us to draw on international experiences and knowledge to further innovation and continuous improvement.

     

    The successful candidate will provide sound technical contributions to our world class projects, including the design of tunnels and other heavy civil engineering structures such as tunnel shafts, adits and caverns for underground infrastructure. They will also develop sustainable solutions for existing underground infrastructure that require capacity assessments, strengthening designs or modifications for future use. Building on their developing technical basis, the successful candidate will be coordinating overall designs by interfacing with other infrastructure disciplines and communicating their designs through 3D models and other digital media. The successful candidate should expect to gain a breadth of experience in underground space and be on the forefront of digital and technical innovations.

     

    Site reviews, supervision and inspections forms a large part of the tunnels work therefore requiring a candidate with enthusiasm towards the use of Underground Space and working on site with contractors. 

     

    Essential Skills and Knowledge: 

     

    • An Engineering or Mining degree with honours;
    • Working towards chartership, with a relevant professional body such as ICE, IStructE or Geological Society;
    • An ability to apply existing knowledge in new areas;
    • Interest and enthusiasm to work on site;
    • Ability to collect information, investigate options and devise solutions;
    • Team and collaborative working skills;
    • Ability to deliver work on time and to budget;
    • Familiarity with Microsoft office, and be able to compose a good technical report;
    • Working knowledge of current Eurocode standards.  

     

    Desirable Skills and Knowledge

     

    • Appreciation of structural or geotechnical finite element analysis and design such as Oasys GSA, Midas, SAP, Plaxis and FLAC;
    • Understanding of programming languages (e.g. Python, Grasshopper, Dynamo);
    • Familiarity with FME software, Arc GIS or similar;
    • Familiarity with CAD software (e.g. Microstation, Autodesk, Rhino);
    • Full UK driving licence;
    • First aid at work training;
    • Confined spaces training;
    • Site experience on a tunnelling or large underground civil structures site.
