Tunnelling job: TBM Operator

    Hello colleagues,

    The Ghella Abergeldie Joint Venture is seeking an experienced TBM Operator to join the team on the Central Interceptor Project in Auckland, New Zealand.

    The Central Interceptor is a wastewater tunnel that will run between the Māngere Wastewater Treatment Plant and Grey Lynn. The main tunnel will run underground for 14.7 kilometres and will be at a depth of between 15 and 110 metres. It will cross the Manukau Harbour at about 15 metres below the seabed. Along the route it will connect to the existing wastewater network. 

    What you’ll get involved in:

    • Operate the TBM, ensuring daily maintenance and routine repairs are completed
    • Supporting the team with excavation and underground work on the tunnel (and physically assisting the grounds team where required)
    • Control speed, pressure, thrust of the TBM as well as the quality of the excavation
    • Measurements of data to help navigate underground 
    • Communicate equipment and tunneling status to shift operator at shift handover
    • Monitoring the excavated material throughout the mining cycle to minimize the risk of over breaks
    • Manage ground conditioning to maintain an Earth Pressures during operations
    • Promote a safety culture within team and during operations

    The successful candidate will have:

    • Previous experience as a TBM operator on major tunneling projects
    • Must have background experience operating an EPB Tunnel Boring Machine
    • Extensive knowledge with guidance system such as VMT and with ring selection for various ring types (universal, up/down, etc.)
    • Able to perform independent assessment of the best parameters to be implemented for the specific ground conditions
    • Physically fit for underground, confined space and if required hyperbaric work
    • Ability to do shift work which includes nights and weekends
    • Knowledge and experience with mechanics and hydraulics (advantageous) to successfully monitor and analyse operating systems.
