Georgia's North-South corridor, the Kvesheti-Kobi road and tunnels are under construction

    Construction of 23 km of road and tunnels in Kvesheti-Kobi, including the longest, 9 km long tunnel is underway.

    The tunnel drilling works are carried out with a TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) machine specially made for the Kvesheti-Kobi project. At this stage, the works in the main tunnel are already 1240 m, and the construction of the evacuation tunnel is being carried out at a depth of 2840 m. At the same time, the construction of the access road to the tunnel continues in an intensive mode.

    Within the framework of Kvesheti-Kobi project, a total of 23 km of 2-lane asphalt-concrete road, 5 bridges, 5 tunnels will be built and 1 bridge will be rehabilitated. 9 km between them. Length and 15 m. Diameter tunnel, which will be the largest tunnel in Georgia and one of the unique in the world.

    The current road length is 34 km, the new 23 km road will reduce the distance by 11 km and the travel time by 1 hour. At the same time, transit shipments will no longer be carried out through Gudauri resort, which, on the one hand, will unload the resort, on the other hand, will make the transit traffic itself safer.

    Within the framework of the project, a 5 km access road to Gudauri will be built, Gudauri will be relieved of non-resort traffic, which will increase the tourist potential of both the resort and the region.

    The total cost of the Kvesheti-Kobi new road project is 1.2 billion GEL. The construction is carried out by the Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia with the financial support of the Asian Development Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (ADB, EBRD). The project is scheduled for completion in 2024.
