Role Objective;

The Tunnel Construction Lead is a key role within the Construction Delivery work stream.  The Construction Delivery work stream delivers all of the Development Phase construction related activities, delivery planning, including the main works contracts, and any enabling and early works contracts for the Lower Thames Crossing Project.

The Tunnel Construction Lead is responsible for delivering;

  • Tunnel construction and systems reviews
  • Construction programme for the tunnel contract including all associated temporary and permanent works
  • Construction methodology and phasing including temporary footprint management
  • Early/Enabling works identification, scope development for elements related to the tunnel contract
Responsibilities:
  • Preparation of technical and non-technical materials related to tunnel construction suitable for the DCO process and contract procurement
  • Represent the project at public meetings, consultation events and formal hearings to explain the proposed solutions and rationale for decisions 
  • Working with other members of the project team to ensure that best international practices in safe, efficient, sustainable construction technologies are considered in the development of the technical design for the project.
  • To work with the "discipline" and technical leads to identify and implement best practice in construction technology
  • To work with the Quality Lead to deliver the approach for monitoring constructability in the development of assurance processes for the detailed design and construction method statements. 
  • To apply lessons learned from industry best practice in the UK and worldwide in relation to ensuring quality in tunnel design and construction.
  • Work with others to enable the project to be transformational in the area of Health, Safety, Security & Well-being (HSSW)
  • To implement and help refine and develop the HSSW action plans, tools and metrics for the development and delivery phases
  • To ensure the tunnel construction team comply with the programme policies, strategies, plans, processes / systems and procedures
  • To lead, manage, monitor and report on the performance of the tunnel construction team
  • To efficiently and effectively collaborate with other project teams and work streams and contribute to an integrated programme delivery approach
Qualifications

 Essential;

  • Bachelor’s degree or similar demonstrated levels of work experience in the field 
  • Extensive construction and design engagement experience on similar heavy civil engineering projects in the overseas or the UK working as designer or designer's site representative. 
  • Working knowledge of current UK health and safety construction legislation
  • Knowledge of the DCO. 
Skills;
  • Demonstrable experience in design for construction and construction logistics
  • Understanding of the consenting processes
  • Extensive understanding of the environmental constraints and mitigations necessary for large infrastructure projects in this field
  • Be able to influence and develop collaborative working relationships with all levels of the project team, Highways England and other stakeholders
  • Excellent oral/written communication
  • Self-starter and self-motivated. 
  • Demonstrate strong leadership and managerial skills
