A tunnel between Rotterdam and Antwerp is proposed amid rapid increase in freight train numbers

Vereniging Alternatief Goederenspoor (VAG) literaly 'Association for Alternative Freight Track', a lobbying group, proposes a tunnel between the cities of Rotterdam (Netherlands) and Antwerp (Belgium).

According to the Dutch publication 'BN DeStem', the tunnel is proposed to tackle the ever increasing freight traffic across the West Brabant region. In the span of 5 years, the weekly number of freight trains running between Rotterdam and Antwerp has increased from around 100 to around 150.

Rotterdam is the biggest harbour in Europe and one of the biggest in the whole World. Rotterdam area also hosts huge chemical facilities and a junction point for Europe's pipelines. A good deal of those trains transport highly dangereous chemicals and given the examples of major accidents in the past, the people in the region of  West Brabant are concerned about the increase  in freight trains. To reduce the risks of accidents, train operators are reducing the speed of the trains, but the interest groups like VAG say, the solution lies in more radical ways, like a railway tunnel.

The idea is in infancy for now but increasingly expected to get support.
