Korea Expressway Corporation, cable-free jet fan system strengthens tunnel fire response capabilities through development and operation
Using a battery instead of a power cable, the jet fan can be operated in the event of a large fire or power outage.
As a result of the pilot installation, the installation cost of the jet fan was reduced by 15%, and operating costs are expected to be reduced when expanding nationwide
Korea Expressway Corporation (Acting President Kim Il-hwan) announced that it had developed a cable-free jet fan* and completed field application to minimize damage in tunnels that may occur due to fire or power infrastructure loss.
* Disaster prevention equipment that generates wind and discharges smoke or heat from a fire to the outside of the tunnel
The cable-free jet fan is equipped with the world's first power supply system developed by Korea Expressway Corporation, and power is supplied from a battery protected from fire or shock to the jet fan through a converter, unlike the existing power supply system that supplies power through cables. It is possible to operate the jet fan stably even in the event of a large fire or power outage.
In December of this year, as a result of pilot installation for 4 locations** including the Gimcheon 1 Tunnel on the Jungbu Inland Expressway, the installation of infrastructure such as power cables was reduced, resulting in a 15% reduction in construction costs. It is also expected to significantly reduce operating costs of about 15 billion won.

An official from Korea Expressway Corporation said, By improving the jet fan power supply system, we were able to reduce costs and at the same time strengthen our capability to respond to tunnel fires.
