Mechanical Engineers, Building Services Engineers (or other numerate discipline) Tunnel Ventilation Engineer

    What is this Job about?

Tunnels and underground structures form an increasingly important part of modern day infrastructure. This infrastructure provides economic, societal and environmental benefits through the facilitation of the efficient and rapid movement of people below-ground. This may be in mass transit systems, high-speed rail lines or in highway tunnels.

We are looking for bright and enthusiastic mechanical engineers (or other numerate discipline) to join our tunnel ventilation team to help us plan, design and enable tunneling projects worldwide and ensure that our tunnels and underground structures are safe, comfortable and reliable.

As a tunnel ventilation engineer, you will design and analyze tunnel ventilation systems for both normal and emergency operations. You will also assess the related elements such as fire and life safety systems following client specifications and worldwide standards. You will work on a range of underground facilities and tunnels, including metro systems, railway stations, road tunnels, cable tunnels and more. You will already have experience in some of these areas and be able to apply that experience to Atkins projects as part of a small, dedicated and specialist team  such areas will include:

Planning, designing and installing ventilation systems for tunnel projects.

Working on a range of systems to ensure tunnels are safe.

Planning and overseeing commissioning, operation, refurbishment and upgrade of tunnel infrastructure.

On-site inspection and performance testing of tunnel ventilation systems.

Applying fluid mechanics and thermodynamics for fire and ventilation modelling.

Implementing fire safety engineering, risk analysis and evacuation analysis.

    What are we looking for?

We are looking for you to bring a range of experience to our team, including elements of the following:

Experience of tunnel ventilation, fire and life-safety design, gained in road, rail and/or metro tunneling schemes.

Working towards chartership but if you are chartered we would also like to hear from you.

Proven numeracy skills and experience on 1D and 3D modelling (such as IDA, SES, FDS).

Excellent technical skills acquired during your academic background with a bachelors or masters degree.

Experience in related industries such as in building services, with an aptitude for and interest in the numerical analysis and modelling aspects.

In addition to that, we expect:

High motivation to succeed, and to progress and develop your career.

Personality compatible with a high degree of collaborative and teamwork in multi-disciplinary and international projects.

Communication and writing skills which are able to produce clear and concise reports or presentations.

Willingness to travel on short assignments within the UK and overseas for dealing with challenging projects or participation in reputed conferences.
