Systra, the Paris-headquartered engineering and consulting group specialized in rail and public transport  buys Spanish tunnel engineering specialist Subterra.

Systra says 'This acquisition strengthens our global expertise in the field of underground design and structures, and increases our presence in Spain and Latin America.

With a staff of 100 people in Spain, Colombia, Chile and Peru, Subterra is a globally recognised expert in the design of tunnels and underground structures. This acquisition allows us to strengthen our expertise in this field and to access new markets.

The acquisition of Subterra is also an opportunity to pursue our development in Europe, particularly in Spain and Portugal, where the transport and construction markets are being boosted by the European recovery plan. SYSTRA has been present on the Iberian market for over twenty years, notably in support of the modernisation of the Bilbao metro, but also on high-speed line projects. The Group’s ambitions in this region are reflected in the creation of a new subsidiary, SYSTRA Ibérica, which will cover the Spanish and Portuguese markets.

This will be SYSTRA’s third acquisition in this field, following the acquisition of the Italian company SWS in 2021 and the Australian company Bamser in 2023, both of which specialise in the design of tunnels and underground structures.'
