    Position Summary:

    Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team in the Engineering Department, a Tunnel Engineer is required to combine their technical experience and knowledge for the management of Tunnel design by the client’s design consultants for mass transit, high speed and freight transfer railway system.

    Support the Design Project Manager in managing and delivering the Tunnel design in accordance with the Programme and the requirements of the client. Working with the Design Project Manager, the Tunnel Engineer shall support regular meetings with the design consultant, various client sectors, and external stakeholders as required for managing, coordinating, and assuring the design. Support in organizing the review of the design consultant’s deliverables, interfacing with subject matter experts and design review teams. Support in providing quality assessment reports to Project Management and the client. Assist the Contracts Department and Construction teams in pre-construction and post contract award activities.

    Major Responsibilities:

    ·        Support, coordinate, manage and monitor the review of Tunnel design deliverables produced by the client’s design consultant, including hazard and risk logs.

    ·        Coordinate the response to comments raised on deliverables by the likes of subject matter experts, the design review team, the Independent Checking Engineer, and Independent Safety Assessors.

    ·        Ensure the buildability of the proposed design and suitability of materials.

    ·        Coordinate and visit the jobsite as required, to resolve problems, interpret drawings and documents and provide technical support during the construction phase.

    ·        Coordinate with other disciplines, consultants, and attend project meetings from time to time.

    ·        Coordinate with Contracts Department and Construction teams for supporting the pre-construction procurement process and the checking and assembly of the design documentation for issue as design-build or design-bid-build tender packages as required.

    ·        Review contractor’s construction drawings, respond to technical queries and technical submittals to ensure compliance with design intent.

    ·        Support client’s Stage Review and Approval Procedure.

    ·        Report progress, critical issues and risk to EPM design manager

    Qualifications and Skills:

    ·        Degree or postgraduate qualification in science, engineering from an accredited university or equivalent qualification with 4 years of progressive experience in tunnel design & construction for underground construction and slope stabilization projects in rock and soil.

    ·        Knowledge of geology and structural engineering.

    ·        Knowledge of international standards and codes.

    ·        Experience of Rock tunnel construction and slope support including design for rock and soil slopes for cuttings, portal faces, intake and outlet structures; slope and open cut support measures including rock bolts and anchors, soil nail walls, bored piles, soldier piles and lagging, concrete retaining walls, sprayed concrete and reinforced soil.

    ·        General Knowledge of various tunnel construction methods, including drill & blast, cut & cover, semi- cut & cover and mining methods (SCL/NATM & TBM).

    ·        Knowledge of ground improvement methods for all types of soft ground, including groundwater drawdown, grouting, chemical grouting, jet grouting, compensation grouting and ground freezing.

    ·        General Knowledge of Tunnel Ventilation Systems and fire life & safety designs and standards is a plus.

    ·        Thorough knowledge of discipline engineering techniques, the design of engineered systems and design calculations.

    ·        Knowledge of current computer applications for engineering and design including appropriate knowledge of CAD (both 2-D and 3-D) e.g AutoCAD, MS Word and Excel for managing design reviews

    ·        Excellent interpersonal, analytical and communication skills (oral and written).

    ·        Proactive, supportive, inquisitive, challenging, hardworking and result driven.

    ·        Ability to manage multiple assignments, changing priorities and work with ambiguity.
