Tunnel Walkway Construction Manager

    Job Introduction

    The Tunnel Walkway Construction manager is responsible for the delivery of the emergency and maintenance walkways in all bored tunnels (NTW, NTE, ET). He oversees and guides the technical aspects of the procurement, establishment of construction methodology and plant use, planning, preparation, and is in charge of the management of the construction activities.

    They will report into the Tunnel Lead Construction Manager and works with the different tunnel asset teams.

    Role Responsibility

    • Supply chain engagement and assistance of the procurement team as technical squad lead. Evaluation of market situation and possible construction methodologies for the execution of the works. Working out of a delivery sift for different construction methods and the possible delivery models (full subcontract, subcontract with SCS contribution, self-performed works).
    • Liaison with the material team to establish concrete mix design requirements supporting the required casting performance under consideration of SCS ambition to use a carbon friendly mix for the execution of the works.
    • Preparing and working out work concepts and detail planning of the work
    • Establishment of quality control system and assurance regime for the works.
    • Addressing of the construction interfaces with the preceding tunnel sub asset works to facilitate a smooth transfer and start up of the walkway construction works.
    • Establishment of work site set up with the different tunnel asset and civil construction teams considering the partial handover scenarios to other following contractors.
    • Actively assists and supports the different sub asset teams with their work where required with his senior knowledge and experience and takes over tasks were required.
    • Oversee establishment of Risk Assessments, WASPS and Method Statements –
    • Liaise with key supplier and key subcontractors in coordination with the tunnel sub asset teams. 
    • Establish a walkway construction team, largely deploying tunnel staff members of tunnel sub assets that are coming to an end before the start of the walkway construction.
    • Plan, guide and oversee the construction works.
    • Preparation and delivering of the tunnel handover to rail system contractor.

     

    Health, Safety & Environment

    • Ensuring health and safety is given the highest priority in the delivery of the works
    • Be familiar with, and demonstrate commitment to the requirements of the Health & Safety and Environmental Policies
    • Ensure that the Health Safety and Environmental Policies and Procedures are effectively communicated to the workforce and implemented
    • Work collaboratively with the HS2 team and other contractors, subcontractors works packages to achieve the overall project goals

     

     

    Other Responsibilities

     

    • Understands the scope of the works and can identify change
    • Promoting the pursuit of excellence and continuous improvement, driving innovation, adopting best practice, standardising processes and procedures
    • Ad hoc duties as required by the job

    The Ideal Candidate

    ·         Engineering Degree / HNC or similar in a construction disciple.

    ·         SMSTS/SSSTS desired.

    ·         Experience with the establishment, optimization and application of in situ concrete mixes and strong knowledge in concrete technology of standard and special concrete in tunnelling environment.

    ·         Long term project experience in tunnelling (more than 10 years) including knowledge of in tunnel logistics and their constraints, tunnel site set up and the interfaces of different tunnelling activities.

    ·          Experiences in either slip formworking paver works or tunnel inner lining concrete works with shutter systems

    ·         Must be hands on with strong change environment nature, ability to embed continuous improvement initiatives.

    The Skanska | Costain | STRABAG (SCS JV) is delivering the HS2 London Tunnels Contract. Scope of works includes twin-bored tunnels (TBM), SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, services diversions, earthworks and the construction of site compounds.
