Ny Veier - Breakthrough at Åstunnel

    Translation of Nye Veier's (The Norwegian National Road Administration) press release;

29 February 2024 was marked breakthrough in the Åstunnel

On the day of the shooting year there was a breakthrough in the Åstunnel. The mayor of Levanger municipality, Anita Ravlo Sand, together with the mayor of Stjørdal municipality, Eli Arnstad, fired exactly at 3 pm of the impact ointment.

The E6 between Kvithammar and Åsen extends from Stjørdal municipality to Levanger municipality. The last time the two mayors marked a breakthrough was in the Forbordsfjelltunnel in Stjørdal municipality, August 31, 2023. This time they have taken the trip, in the same errand, to mark the breakthrough in the Åstunnel in the municipality of Levanger.

Well out of the tunnel comes two satisfied mayors.

    - This is a big day! Now we are a long step closer to a faster and safer E6 between the Innherred and the Trondheim region, says Anita Ravlo Sand, mayor of Levanger municipality. - It is important for both our citizens who run the route regularly, and to ensure a good and stable thoroughfare between southern and northern Norway. I am impressed with how quickly the work has gone - there is talk of a tunnel in two races of over two kilometers!

    - This is a new breakthrough in a large and important project for our entire region. We are tied together through these tunnels, and I would like to congratulate Nye Veier and Hæhre with good work and good progress. We appreciate that, says Eli Arnstad, mayor of Stjørdal municipality.

Nye Veier is the builder of the new E6 between Kvithammar and Åsen in Trøndelag. The contractor for the project is Hæhre Entreprenør AS.

    - First and foremost, I would like to thank the locals for showing patience in connection with the blasting work, says project manager Lars Erik Moe in Nye Veier.

    - There has been a demanding work during buildings and under rail, and with small rock cover. Good focus on personal safety has meant that this work is done without personal injury.

    - Today here we tamed the troll in the Åstunnel and marked impact in the traditional way, says Reidar Løvhaugen, sub -project manager for tunnel driving in Hæhre.

    - This has been a project with exciting tunnel experts. With proximity to buildings, crossing under rail and two zones with mountain cover less than four meters, as well as sensitive ground conditions over the tunnel, with strict requirements for shaking, pore pressure and leakage.

    Facts about the Åstunnel

The Åstunnel is 2 100 meters, with two races and with two lanes in each direction. It is calculated approx. 1.5 years driver time from start to completion. Hæhre started driving the tunnel on October 12, 2023.

There are seven accident for vehicles for use in emergency and eight cross -connections with escape opportunities between the tunnel runs.

When the Åstunnel is completed, over 330,000 m3 of mountains have been taken out, with the help of about 1 million kg of explosives, distributed over an estimated 900 ointments.

Then about 50 tunnel workers will have used approx. 110,000 working hours on, before it became a finished tunnel.

The new highway gets four fields and a speed limit of 110 km/h. The stretch is approx. 19 kilometers, of which 12 are in the tunnel.

Four fields, double tunnel runs and increased speed limit will provide better accessibility, reduced travel time and more predictability for road users. The new road will also increase traffic safety.

The entire E6 stretch of road from Kvithammar to Åsen is scheduled to be opened in 2027.
