International design, engineering, and advisory company Aurecon has been appointed as the design consultant for the design and construction of tunnels between Maju Station and Clementi Station for the Cross Island Line (CRL) in Singapore.
The project, awarded to Sinohydro Corporation Limited (Singapore Branch) at a value of around S$199 million, involves the construction of twin rail tunnels, each spanning 1.4 kilometers. These tunnels will connect the future Maju and Clementi stations in the second phase of the Cross Island Line, enhancing connectivity and accessibility for residents in the western region of Singapore.
Jean-Marc Girard, Chief Operating Officer, Asia at Aurecon said, "The tunnels present unique engineering challenges, as they will run beneath key infrastructure, such as the Sungei Ulu Pandan canal. We aim to deliver innovative and sustainable solutions that will minimise the impact on the surrounding environment."
Aurecon's role as design consultant includes bored tunnelling, mined tunnelling, geotechnical engineering, civil works, structures, and building services. To manage the complex geological conditions, minimise ground deformation and its impact on adjacent structures, the project will employ three Slurry Tunnel Boring Machines.
Er. Khine Hnin Yi, Technical Director, Geotechnical at Aurecon said, "Our involvement from the tender design stage allowed us to provide crucial design optimisations. By minimising the cross-section profile of the mined tunnel and the footprint of the launching shaft, we will reduce concrete material usage and excavation volume, thereby increasing work efficiency while minimising construction risks."
This appointment for the Cross Island Line tunnels reinforces Aurecon's growing presence in Singapore, supporting the nation’s vision for an advanced and efficient transportation network.
The project adds to Aurecon's portfolio of major transport infrastructure projects including work on other sections of the Cross Island Line with Contract CR108 Pasir Ris Interchange Station and CR208 Clementi Interchange Station, Jurong Region Line Contracts J102 and J109, Contract 810C Sengkang-Punggol Light Rapid Transit Depot Expansion, R8205 Bearing Replacement Works at SPLRT and ID103 Tuas Engineering Study.
