Óscar Puente highlights that the future railway connection of the Outer Port of A Coruña will boost its national and international activity
The Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, attended the cale of the main access railway tunnel to the Port of A Coruña, in Punta Langosteira, where he highlighted the good pace at which the works of the future railway connection are progressing, which will boost the infrastructure activity. “The connection will open the door to railway traffic, with which it will see the potential of its activity reinforced both nationally and internationally,” the minister assured during the cale event of Tunnel 1, of 3,7 km, with which its excavation ends.
“The milestones are being reached that will lead us to be able to have trains circulating on the horizon 2027 between the outer port of Coruña and the Atlantic Axis, to begin to perceive their positive results. We estimate that its entry into operation will lead Punta Langosteira to move more than 600,000 tons per year by train,” the minister explained.
"Betting on train-boat intermodality is to gain positions in freight transport in our country and in the rest of Europe,” he added.
This tunnel 1 is the most representative part of the new access since it represents 55% of the total length of the 6.7 km section that will connect the Outer Port of Coruña with the Atlantic Axis, already in service.
The new infrastructure will involve an investment of 124.8 million euros and is 100% financed with Next Generation funds from the European Union, within the framework of the Recovery Plan. The works of this railway connection, executed by Adif AV, are the result of the agreement signed in 2022 by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Adif AV, Puertos del Estado and the Port Authority of A Coruña.
"This project would not have taken place without the tacit understanding of the Ministry that I now direct, through Puertos del Estado and Adif, with the Port Authority of A Coruña,” the minister said.
On the other hand, the head of the Department has announced that “we are analyzing how to improve the connection of this branch of access to the port.” Thus, in order to complement and improve its railway connectivity, “the possibility of providing a new terminal with sufficient capacity within the port's sphere of influence, which allows servicing the traffic that the Coruña-San Diego freight terminal, located next to the inner port, now receives” is being assessed.
