Includes a 4.2-kilometer tunnel that will be built past Lillehammer.
Nye Veier and AF Gruppen have signed a contract for the construction of the E6 Roterud - Storhove AF Gruppen and their advisor Norconsult will build 23 kilometers of new four-lane motorway along Mjøsa for Nye Veier.
- The contract signing is a significant milestone for everyone who has worked for and looked forward to this important transport project. The road projects Nye Veier delivers to society provide significantly improved traffic safety, good and predictable accessibility and reduced travel time. The development of the E6 Roterud – Storhove is the fifth major road project being implemented by Nye Veier in the Mjøs region, and we are well underway with planning the next ones, says CEO Anette Aanesland of Nye Veier.
The contract includes the construction of a 23-kilometer four-lane highway from Roterud north of Biri in Gjøvik municipality to Storhove in Lillehammer municipality. The road will have a speed limit of 110 km/h and, among other things, a 4.2-kilometer tunnel will be built past Lillehammer, a new bridge over Lågen and three intersections.
Large and complex project
From Roterud, where the current bypass section ends, the current E6 will be reused and expanded with two new lanes. The intersection at Vingrom will be moved a few hundred meters north. This will free up space in the center of Vingrom and provide more area for the outdoor recreation area by Mjøsa. In Øyresvika, an access road to and from Lillehammer will be built, and here the 4,2-kilometer-long tunnel that will run on the west side of Lågen up to Trosset farm will also start. At Trosset, a new bridge will be built over Lågen, where the road continues to the new intersection that will be built at Storhove.
- The project is very extensive and complicated, and there is a lot to be built. Together with our partners, we have worked hard to mature the project. E6 is the main artery through the country, and further development will help to tie Norway closer together. From experience, we know that our development projects create new job opportunities for local and regional players in the construction industry. Approximately every third krone remains in the region through deliveries of services, equipment and materials. In addition to deliveries to the contractors, local purchases that the construction workers make while they live in the area also contribute to increased value creation, says Development Director Espen Almlid.
Thorough and comprehensive collaboration process A very thorough and comprehensive collaboration process has been carried out with AF Gruppen and Norconsult prior to the contract signing to improve the road project and contribute to a more gentle development with a reduced climate footprint.
- Today, a heavily trafficked E6 already runs through a very vulnerable part of the Lågendeltaet nature reserve. In addition, the current road causes some noise and inconvenience to those living close to the road. When the project is completed, a significant section of the current E6 along the nature reserve will be laid in a 4,2 km long tunnel. The Vingnes tunnel will move much of the traffic away from the most vulnerable areas for birds, while at the same time shielding the local population and residential areas in Lillehammer from traffic noise, says Almlid.
The use of a push-pull bridge over Lågen will also contribute to reduced construction activity in connection with the nature reserve. After the foundations have been established, the bridge deck will be built on land and then pushed out over the river. An advantage of this type of bridge is that construction can be more easily adapted to times that take into account biodiversity, and more of the work can be done outside the river itself and at a greater distance from the reserve.
Nye Veier focuses on the Inland Region
Nye Veier has had extensive construction activity on the E6 in the Inland Region, and this work will continue, emphasizes Aanesland.
- We have already completed the construction of 43 kilometers of new E6 from Kolomoen to Moelv, and work north of Lillehammer is well underway. Now we will quickly start the development from Biri to Lillehammer. Our plan is to continue the comprehensive development of traffic-safe roads in the Mjøs region further north from Moelv. The focus is on the Inland Region, says Anette Aanesland in conclusion.
The total framework for the development contract is NOK 6,35 billion, excluding VAT. Construction work will start in the near future. The road is scheduled to open in the summer of 2030.
The new E6 Roterud – Storhove is part of the comprehensive development of the new E6 between Moelv and Øyer. The new E6 will provide better traffic safety and accessibility, and is important for road users, businesses and emergency preparedness.
Nye Veier is the client, while AF Gruppen is carrying out the project for Nye Veier. Norconsult is the consultant .
The E6 is the main thoroughfare through the country, and the current two-lane road along Lake Mjøsa is not suitable for the current and future traffic volume. It has physical medians on parts of the route, which weakens preparedness, and where there are no medians, there are significant traffic safety challenges. Now a safe four-lane motorway is to be built that will eliminate head-on accidents and make travel more efficient. \
