The British government watchdog National Audit Office (NAO) says that the HS2 rail project is over budget (with current estimate of £106 Billion versus the original estimate of £34 billion) and behind schedule.
Watchdog says this is due to government and HS2 Ltd having underestimated the project complexity and project risks since the start of the project.
What is HS2?
United Kingdom's High Speed 2 (HS2) project is a high-speed railway network under construction. HS2 railway is to link 21 destinations – Birmingham, Birmingham airport, Carlisle, Chesterfield, Crewe, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Manchester airport, Newcastle, Old Oak Common in London, Oxenholme, Penrith, Preston, Sheffield, Warrington and York.
The project is executed by the government-funded company High Speed Two (HS2) Limited. Company is responsible for for developing and promoting the project. HS2 Website says, the new high speed railway will connect 8 of UK's biggest 10 cities serving around 30 million people, almost half the UK population.
The HS2 project is comprised of Phase 1 and Phase 2 parts. According to HS2 Ltd, Phase 1 will link London and Birmingham by 2026 and Phase 2 will link West Midlands and Manchester in the west and Leeds in the east completing the network by 2033.

In defence of the HS2 project
What do the Victoria Line, the Jubilee Line, the Channel Tunnel, the M25 and Buckingham Palace all have in common? They were wildly over budget, long delayed - and the Treasury wanted to cancel them all.

Just how blow-out is the HS2 budget?
Experts close to the review of HS2 have cast doubt on the significance of the £106bn cost figure.
Cancelling High Speed 2 (HS2) now will have a “devastating impact” on the UK construction industry, major contractors, consultants and rail bodies told prime minister Boris Johnson in a letter this week.
Members of the High Speed Rail Group and the Railway Industry Association wrote to Johnson expressing “deep alarm” at the growing number of reports that
If HS2 is really so costly, it is a huge mistake.
HS2 could rack up a bill bigger than the combined construction costs of five of Britain's most iconic publicly-funded projects.
Will HS2 really help cut the UK’s carbon footprint?

Straight talk. Sadly, almost everything about HS2 invites disbelief. The costs are stupefying, the design is too complicated and its environmental credentials are questionable.
HS has got the blessing and the go ahead of the British PM yesterday. As of now, I shall be posting on HS2 at the newly created HS2 group.
