Instead of settling their five-year dispute, lawyers for Washington state took the offensive Thursday by asking a jury to award $57 million from its Highway 99 tunnel contractors for delays caused when tunnel-boring machine Bertha stalled in 2013.
Lawsuits, fines and so on. But the end-product is good.

WSDOT officials think the moisture is coming into the tunnel through a grout port, which is a location used during construction to inject grout into the ground surrounding the tunnel walls, to fill in space.

Contractor ordered to pay Washington state $57M over tunnel-boring machine Bertha’s big stall
The $57.2 million verdict, reached Friday morning against the tunnel contractors in Thurston County Superior Court in Olympia, represents the entire amount the state requested in opening statements.
“The contractor (Seattle Tunnel Partners - STP), not the taxpayers, is responsible for the costs of repairing the tunneling machine,” WSDOT spokeswoman Laura Newborn said Friday.
