Bowbazar tunnel boring machine cannot be used. A new TBM will replace it
Tunnelling expert Leonard John Endicott says the tunnel boring machine which caused the subsidence in Bowbazar can not be used anymore. Because it has 'sunk and in the wrong position'.
Leonard John Endicott was assigned by Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited (KMRCL) to tackle the Bowbazar tunnelling mishap which caused houses collapse during Kolkata's East-West metro tunnel boring.
He is quoted saying: "Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) 1 has stopped working and it will not be in use again. Basically, it has sunk and it is in the wrong position. TBM 2 will be installed under Nirmal Chandra Street"
Before the problem on August 31 2019, two tunnel boring machines were boring in parallel.
Completion of boring is now expected in the first quarter of 2021.
"Tunnel-boring for E-W Metro to be completed by Q1 of 2021"
Before the restart of East-West metro tunnel boring, houses overhead will be evacuated as a precaution
