Gaia, the tunnel boring machine, has seen the daylight after completing the boring of the first tube in RijnlandRoute. The 11 meter diameter tunnel boring machine will de de-assembled and and then reassembled to start boring the second tube of the RijnlandRoute project.
Before the tunnel boring machine came, the place it would come out was filled with water to counterbalance the pressure. Therefore, when the TBM came out, it came in the water.
The RijnlandRoute in The Netherlands is a road connection in construction between Katwijk via de south of Leoden to A4 nearby Zoeterwoude. An important part of the project is a bored tunnel under Voorschoten that connects the A44 and A4 roads.
