While Norway has still been contemplating over their "world's first ship tunnel", Finland has quietly opened world's real first ship tunnel. Kimola tunnel is a ship canal with a rock tunnel. Tunnel part is only 70 meters long (the kanal itself is 7 km long). Nevertheless, it is still a ship tunnel. A first in the world. Norwegians are welcome to compete to build world's second ship tunnel!

During the renovation work which started in 2018, the 70-meter-long rock tunnel was left in the canal has been widened, raised and strengthened. Building a bridge to replace the tunnel would have been more expensive. Renovation work has cost 20,8m euros.

On the first day of opening a total of 120 boats have passed through the tunnel.
