To really succeed towards solving the transport problems of New Zealand's biggest city, transport officials want a rail tunnel under the Auckland harbour a decade before any road tunnel.
They say, adding additional road lanes will only marginally improve the traffic problem. The more radical solution lies on a rail connection.

Meanwhile, the Automobile Association (AA) says the proposal to wait at least 25 years before building a new road crossing is “laughable” and it would be disastrous to delay action for that long.
A business case is proposing to wait until the 2040s before building a new road link across the water, and motoring advocates aren't happy.
