Ceneri Base Tunnel became operational
Sunday 13 December 2020 was a historic day for Switzerland and the Italian-speaking Canton of Ticino. Monte Ceneri Tunnel is now fully operational.
The new 15.4 km long railway tunnel speeds up radically the train trip between Milano, Bern and Zurich. Ceneri Base Tunnel is another addition to the string of tunnels between Switzerland and Italy.
Passenger and freight trains in Ticino are now running regularly through the Ceneri Base Tunnel. The structure, which was inaugurated in September, completes the New Railway-Alpine Transversal (NEAT) and brings faster north-south connections.
Transalpine Ceneri Base Tunnel is yet another great tunnel engineering achievement in Switzerland.
