For the second time, the road toll giant Transurban announces delay for the West Gate Tunnel Project. Transurban tells its investors on Tuesday that the project will not finish even in its "new" deadline of 2023 as announced around a year ago to the investors. In fact, it is very unlikely that it will finish even in 2024.
Transurban chief executive Scott Charlton has also mentioned "substantial" cost overruns for the project. Press (The Age) reports the overrun figure as $3 billion based on Treasury estimates leaked.
The project is already costing road users hundreds of millions of dollars annually in the increased toll charges to help finance the project.
The $6.7 billion project was scheduled to start in July 2019 and finish by 2022. A dispute with the contractors over who would pick the bill for the handling of the contaminated soil resulted in contractors bailing out of the project.
