The tunnel boring machine which will bore the tunnels of the Mumbai Coastal Road Project has been fully assembled.

The 12.9 metre diameter TBM will be the biggest ever TBM to be used in a project in India. The TBM has been manufactured by China Railway Construction Heavy Industry Company (CRCHI). The Chinese origin of the TBM has been controversial amid Chinese aggression on India's international borders which killed tens of soldiers from each side in the past year.

The Rs 12,000-crore Mumbai Coastal Road is being constructed by Larsen and Toubro (L&T). The new road will connect south Mumbai with northwestern suburbs of the city.

The TBM will start boring on January 7, 2021.
