Statens vegvesen (The Norwegian Public Roads Administration) invites contractors, subcontractors and the consulting industry to a supplier meeting at Teams on E39 Ålesund-Molde on Monday 21 June.
The entire stretch of E39 will be 75 kilometers. It will include 4 tunnels of total length of 30,4 kilometers as well as other important road infrastructure like suspension bridge and other roads.
Among the 4 tunnels, the 14,5 kilometer long Romsdalsfjordtunnel tunnel will be the longest subsea tunnel in Norway and it will have twin-tubes.
The project is part of the overall goal of getting a better road standard on the E39, and is part of the long-term improvement of the E39 that connects the cities along Western Norway. The most important goal for the project in Møre og Romsdal is nevertheless to connect Molde and Ålesund to a housing and labor market.
Five sections - many contracts .
The project is divided into five planning plots:
Possible start-up on the Ørskogfjellet-Molde section in 2023 is subject to necessary decisions in municipalities, counties and the Storting. The plan is to start construction in 2023. With sufficient annual allocations, the new European road can open in 2030.
- This is a good and important project. We have divided it into significantly more contracts than the number of planning plots, says project manager Harald Inge Johnsen in the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, E39 Ålesund-Molde.
The Norwegian Public Roads Administration has set up a contract strategy with a large spread in the size of the contracts. The smallest will cost a few tens of millions of kroner on preparatory contracts. The Romsdalsfjord tunnel and Julsundbrua will be the largest contracts in the area of three to four billion.
- We expect a good response in the market, says project manager Johnsen.
The Norwegian Public Roads Administration is planning a bridge and tunnel with four fields. At Julsundbrua, there will also be a separate field for walking, cycling and slow-moving vehicles. On other sections, a 4-lane road with a design speed of 110 km / h is planned. At the same time, the zoning plans will facilitate a step-by-step development with a 2/3 lane road with simple tunnel runs in stage 1. There will be a central drive on the entire section with overtaking lanes. The exception is the running tunnels where a wide central field is one of the safety measures.

Builds the county together
On the section Digernes - Ørskogfjellet, the zoning plan work will start in June this year. Several different road lines have been proposed on the section. All include one to two tunnels.
It is expected that planning work will begin on the Breivika-Digernes section at the turn of the year 21/22. There are sketches of both development along the existing route and several new routes, partly in tunnels.
The Norwegian Public Roads Administration has worked out good solutions for bridges, tunnels and the rest of the road. Now we look forward to starting the dialogue with the industry. Together we will build Møre and Romsdal, together, says Johnsen.
