Tunnel Boring Machine Annie digging the Greenwich Connection Tunnel has completed 1km of her 4.5km journey to Bermondsey.

The tunnel will connect Greenwich Pumping Station to the main super sewer at Chambers Wharf providing additional sewer capacity in South East London and will help tackle the problem of sewage overflow into Deptford Creek, also known as the River Ravensbourne.

TBM Annie recently passed through our Deptford Church Street site and is now on her way to Earl Pumping Station before continuing on towards Chambers Wharf.

Annie is smaller than the main tunnel TBMs but still measures 6.4m in diameter. She was shipped from Germany before being assembled at a location near the O2 Arena and transported to site.

The tunnelling machine is named after Annie Scott Dill Russell, the first female scientist to work at the Greenwich Observatory.

As part of our work to build London's super sewer we are using the river to remove material from the tunnel and take it away from site. At Greenwich we are using barges on Deptford Creek minimising the need for hundreds of lorry journeys on the capital’s streets.
