Work continues on the Pekel tunnel construction. It is part of European Union's EUR 101 mln investment out of its Cohesion Fund to upgrade the railtrack between Maribor and Šentilj, close to the border with Austria in the direction of Graz.  Work involves improvements to the Šentilj tunnel and the construction of the Pekel tunnel. The new railway line should be operational by February 2023.

Currently, excavation works for the construction of the Pekel tunnel on the section of the Maribor-Šentilj railway line are being carried out only from the northern side. But the work will also start on the south side.
