New LED fluorescent lamps in the Øresund Bridge tunnel provide major cost and energy savings

For more than ten years, Øresundsbro Konsortiet has worked purposefully to reduce energy consumption, for example through extensive replacements in road lighting and pylon lighting. Now it's time to modernize the tunnel lighting using LED fluorescent lamps, without having to replace the 20-year-old luminaires.
The luminaires in the Øresund tunnel were installed when the connection was completed in 1999-2000. The luminaires are still well-preserved and can therefore remain seated, but will in future be lit with LED fluorescent lamps, which are expected to provide an energy saving of 9.6 GWh during the eleven-year estimated lifetime. This corresponds to a consumption on the entire connection of 1.5 years or 50 villa heat pump consumption for 11 years.
- In addition to a large energy and cost saving, it is also a circular and sustainable project not to have to scrap the luminaires and buy new ones, as they are still in good condition. Our supplier has presented a smart way to adapt the luminaires to modern lighting, says Bengt Hergart.
Since 2009, only every sixth fluorescent lamp in the tunnel is lit at night, and three years later, every second fluorescent lamp was switched off during the day. And so it will be in the future to maintain low energy consumption.
- In the first years, the tunnel had an unnecessarily strong lighting, so there are good opportunities to limit the lighting without compromising safety, says Bengt Hergart.
The replacement will take place over eight nights Monday to Thursday at 20.00-05.30 in weeks 48 and 49. First, the fluorescent tubes in the northern tunnel tube will be replaced in the direction of Denmark and the following week in the direction of Sweden.
Once the lighting is replaced, each lamp is expected to burn for 100.00 hours, which is 30,000 more than the fluorescent tubes that were installed in 2013 and at the time also contributed to a significant energy saving.
- We reckon that we will not have to replace the lighting again until eleven years from now, which makes this another sustainable investment on the connection from several perspectives, says Bengt Hergart.
