Finland : Helsinki announces plans for a new harbour tunnel

    Raalfu Leinonen

The City of Helsinki has announced plans for a tunnel between Länsisatama (West Harbour) and Länsiväylä (Western Fairway) for cargo and passenger car traffic in the harbor.

The amount of traffic in the West Harbour is growing and the harbour tunnel aims to improve its smoothness. The aim of the planning is to move all the freight traffic and significant part of the port's passenger car traffic in Jätkäsaari and Ruoholahti underground.

According to preliminary plans, the tunnel would pass underground either through Ruoholahti or Kamppi and Lapinlahti. The mouth of the harbour tunnel and the terrestrial shares would be located in Jätkäsaari in the harbor area. Three alternative locations are explored at the mouth of the other end of the tunnel. In one option under investigation, the tunnel would dive underground at the edge of Lapinlahti Hospital Park, and in the other two options the mouth would be closer to the western fairway.

In addition some high-rise office blocks planned.
