The summit between the two countries relaunches the 49km long tunnel plans between two countries across the Straight of Gibraltar separating Africa from Europe.

Larazon reports (in Spanish) that the Minister of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma), Raquel Sánchez, said "we are going to give a boost to the studies of the Fixed Link Project of the Strait of Gibraltar that was started by both countries forty years ago. A strategic project for Spain and Morocco and also for Europe and Africa”. She said this after meeting her Moroccan counterpart, Nizar Baraka at the Spain-Morocco Summit held in Rabat,

Larazon reports that also before the summit there has been some activity both in Spain and Morocco showing the interest in the project like on the Moroccan side the appointment of AbdelKabir Zahoud in November as the director of National Company for Studies of the Strait of Gibraltar, attached to the Ministry of Equipment and Water. In the Spanish side, the Spanish Company for Fixed Communications Studies through the Strait of Gibraltar (Segecsa) has been included in the beneficiaries of the European funds of the Spanish recovery plan to undertake new studies on this infrastructure.

It is too early now to say when and if it will go to the implementation phase. When the enthusiasm catches up with the costs to build the plan, the ball will start rolling.
