Lately Dutch authorities started a feasibility study for connecting the island of Ameland with the mainland Netherlands, Amelanders' reaction was "Never nooit" (literally "Never never"). A similar study in 2008 for a tunnel to another West Frisian island of Texel was equally unpopular with the Tesselaars. As a local journalist put it very aptly: If you want to querral with the Tesselaars, sart talking about a tunnel".
Islanders believe that the lack of fixed connection with the mainland makes their islands safer. They are heppy with the boat connection and especially vary of a day and night available connectivity a tunnel would bring,
They mention that there has never been a bank robbery on their islands and add "you rob the bank and then what do you do? You take the boat? Then the police would be awaiting you on the other side of the water. Likewise, if you steal a car, you cannot leave the island."
They also say that the boat connection ads to the charm of the island which thrive on tourism from mainland.
Most probably no tunnels in the foreseeable future to the West Frisian islands in The Netherlands....
