Overtourism indeed creates a lot of hassle for locals in many cities where ignorant tourists stroll around like they are in Disneyland.
But in places like Hallstatt and Venice where the local economy is almost 100% reliant on tourism, I think such "overtourism" protests are mainly about money. More money.
They are mainly trying to curb day-tourism as day-trippers do not spend much money. They want only the tourists who stay overnight and spend much more money.
Same in Venice, same in Hallstatt.
