ACCIONA and its partners in the Túnel Madri consortium—Dragados, Comsa, and Sorigué—have celebrated the final breakthrough of the Zona Universitaria-Mandri section of Line 9 of the Barcelona Metro. This follows the arrival of the Hospi tunnel boring machine at the Mandri shaft.
After reaching this key milestone, work will focus on excavating the 1,600 m of the Mandri-Lesseps section, the final part of Line 9. The tunnel boring machine will first undergo adaptation and maintenance to meet the challenges of this section, which faces different geological conditions.
The work began in the attack shaft of the Zona Universitaria station, where the EPB tunnel boring machine "Hospi," with a diameter of over 12 meters, was introduced to bore the 3,933-meter length and create the 11-meter internal diameter tunnel for the Zona Universitaria-Mandri section. This project is considered one of the most significant works in Catalonia.
KEY POINTS
Line 9 of the Barcelona Metro, now connecting Barcelona airport with the city centre, is the longest metro line in Europe, stretching 50 km and serving 52 stations. Its automation, eliminating the need for a driver, makes it one of Europe's most modern lines.
