Türkiye: İzmir Buca Subway line progresses with 5,1 km tunnelling excavated with 4 TBMs

Works in the Buca Subway are progressing rapidly. The first tunnel opening machine, which started to work on January 22 and entered gradually, has excavated 5.1 kilometers of tunnels so far. 26 percent of the tunnels were opened with increasing tempo during the 8-month period.

In the Buca Subway, which İzmir Büyükkent (metropolitan) Municipality continues with its own resources, the mole continues with excavations. Üçyol-Dokuz Eylül University Tınaztepe Campus and Çamlıkule, which will serve 13.5 kilometers line in the Buca Metro, will be in two tubes excavated by two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM). The first one of the TBMs that started to work on January 22, 2024 and the others have started on March 4, 2024, 15 April 2024 and 13 May 2024. Tunnel Boring Machines which were lowered at General Asım Gündüz Station and Buca Koop Station will ensure the rapid excavation of the tunnels.

TBMs continue to dig
Works in Buca Metro continues in 6 regions, including General Asım Gündüz, Buca Koop, Dokuz Eylül, Çamlıkule, Hasanağa Garden Stations and İzmirspor. Tunnel boring works continue with 4 tunnel boring machines, 2 at General Asım Gündüz Station and 2 at Buca Koop Station. Between General Asım Gündüz Station and Üçyol Station; The first TBM dug 1780 meters and the second TBM dug 360 meters. Between Buca KOOP and DEÜ Tınaztepe Station; the third TBM excavated 1140 meters, fourth TBM excavated 820 meters. Total 5.1 kilometers of tunnels were excavated in about 8 months with four TBMs, while 26 percent of the tunnels were excavated. Works continue rapidly.

400 thousand passengers per day
Buca Subway, serving the stations of the Üçyol, Zafertepe, Bozyaka, General Asım Gündüz, Şirinyer, Buca Municipality, Kasaplar Square, Hasanağa Garden, Dokuz Eylül University, Buca Koop and Çamlıke, will connect at the Üçyol Station with the existing subway line between Fahrettin Altay and Bornova. The new Buca Subway will also connect at Şirinyer station with the other subway İZBAN. The Buca subway train sets will serve as driverless. The transportation time between Çamlıkule (the furthers station of Buca) and İzmir Bay  will decrease to only 15 minutes.

Buca Subway, which is under construction, is expected to be completed for 765 million euros with vehicles. When the line is opened to operation, the number of daily passengers is expected to be 400 thousand.

    Congratulations to İzmir Municipality. Especially because they built it with their own resources. They can get no money from Ankara which is a shame. But this did not stop them!
