Stonehenge Tunnels - UK contractors shun the tender but overseas JVs submit bids for the £1.25bn project

 

UK's premier construction publication New Civil Engineer writes that Highway England's decision to procure the £1.25bn project as a one step design + build package is the reason for the "first tier" UK companies not submitting bids.

UK contractors are vary of risks involved in committing a price to build the tunnels for which the design and construction method are yet to be determined.

This has not stopped the European companies from bidding for the project though. Nevertheless, the one-step procurement method has reportedly pushed the bidding prices up, as the contractors wanted to hedge their risks.
