Pakistan: Malakand Tunnel project budged has been radically increased

It is written in Pakistan newssites that National Highway Authority's (NHA) Executive Board has recommended the 2nd revised PC-1 of Malakand Tunnel project. The recommended 2nd revised PC-1 has projected cost of Rs23.565 billion where as the original PC-1 projected cost of Rs9.043 billion.A radical increase mainly because of dollar exchange rate changes and also switching from one tube to 2 tube tunnel.

The Malakand Pass is a mountain pass in Malakand District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. The 14 km curvy road on the hills is deemed dangerous because of heavy traffic and frequent landslides.

Will Korea lend money also for 2 tube tunnel?

Therefore an alternative 9.77 km Malakand Pass with Tunnel has been proposed by NHA. It was originally planned to be a single tube tunnel but now will be a two tube tunnel. When the plan was for one tune tunnel in December 2012, EXIM Bank Korea/ Government agency for the Economic Development Fund (EDCF) of Korea had agreed to lend  $ 78.00 million to finance the project. Obviously with two tubes, the costs have soared.

When back it was  planned as one-tube tunnel, Korean companies were to construct the tunnel.
