The 19th century tunnel Tenda tunnel between the Vermenagna and Roya valleys is important for the region. The tunnel near French border sees much traffic especially in ski season.
The tunnel became a a concern after the statements of the mayor of Tenda who said the arches are in danger of collapse from the 700 meters from Italian entrance, because of too much water infiltration. But now Anas, the operator of the tunnel says says no need for alarm and there is no structural risks and water infiltrations are due to bad weather. Company say plaster parts and the brick cladding need maintenance.
They say "Ribs will have to be mounted, but total closure will not be needed". They also say that the tunnel is constantly monitored by Anas surveillance staff.
The mayor of Limone also thinks it is unjustified and unnecessarily alarmist. These are normal infiltrations that do not involve risks.
At the same time the new tunnel will be completed by the end of 2021 and the historical tunnel will be rebuilt to the same size for the second half of 2024.
