Proposed Rosengarten tunnel in Zurich has been rejected by voters

 

The proposed Rosengarten tunnel in Zurich did not go well with the voters. As a matter of fact it has been flatly rejected.

The proposal was building a 2.3 kilometer long tunnel to solve the traffic congestion problem in the busy street of Rosengartenstrasse in Zurich and also building a tram line on the vacated ground.

The majority of the voters, as a matter of fact as high as 62.8% of them, said 'No' to the project. Many thought the cost was too high to calm down a busy street of only 700 meters: The project would cost 1.1 billion francs. Also many others thought not only it would not solve the problem, but even worse would attract more car traffic to the city.

The project has put the Red-Green city government with their voting base. While the city government presented the proposal, their voting base has been critical. The city government was quick to throw the ball to the No-voters.  Speaking to a journal,  the economics director of the canton of Zurich, Carmen Walker Späh (FDP), said that it was now the turn of the opponents of the tunnel to show how the traffic problem on Rosengartenstrasse could be solved. Next to the failed road tunnel proposal, there have been other proposals like imposing a low speed, building a tram line etc.

    There have been strong opposition to the Rosengarten tunnel:

    "The canton had put together an almost irresistible package: reassurance for the Rosengarten district, tram tracks for the public-friendly townspeople and the the promise that they could drive into the city better than ever before. Something for everyone."

    "56,000 cars would have been released on its portals every day, which would have caused the same damage as today: CO2 emissions, air pollution, noise, accidents and traffic jams. "

    "The No is a disaster for FDP government councilor Carmen Walker Späh. It pushed the tunnel like no one else, praised it as “city repair” and ennobled it with adjectives such as “balanced” and “sustainable”. She, who herself owns an apartment building in the immediate vicinity of Rosengartenstrasse and who would have personally benefited from the added value of the property, was an unbelievable ambassador. "

    And the author says that the proposal has completely ignored the Climate Crisis and that nobody had any idea what contribution the tunnel could make to climate-neutral mobility.

    "The 'No' of the Zurich population is a signal that all traffic politicians who are still preaching the concepts of the 1960s"
