Cologne Transport Director Andrea Blome pushes for more subway tunnels for Cologne. She says the city needs the additional tunnels up to 15 kilometers long and this is the moment to do it. The Greens in the City Council are fiercely opposed to an underground tunnel and prefer the overground rail links.

Transport Director points out that only if the light rail is upgraded then there will be less car traffic. She also says that overground light rail will not let the Cologne's public transport company to run efficiently overground, therefore an underground link is necessary.

The split between the CDU and the Greens on this matter so strong that the the city (only provisionally) decided for a compromise. They decided to extend the existing platforms at the stops so that Cologne's public transport company (KVB) could use long trains to transport more passengers. `Later` they would decide whether a subway tunnel will still be built between Heumarkt and Aachener Weiher. So the CDU want a tunnel and the Greens want the `provisional` situation to become a `permanent` situation.
