The balance act goes on between the proponents and opposers of Great Lakes tunnel 100 feed below the Straits of Mackinac where the Lake Huron meets the Lake Michigan to replace the Line 5 oil pipeline.
The Labor bosses of Michigan place their weight in favor of constructing the Great Lakes tunnel in an opinion column published on Sunday (Feb 16th) on The Detroit Times.
The authors claiming to represent the Michigan Laborers consists of seven Local Unions with over 13,000 members, speak favorably for the Great Lakes tunnel.
"Mackinac Straits Corridor Authority to meet on March 6 in St. Ignace. The Mackinac Straits Corridor Authority (MSCA), tasked with overseeing construction and operation of a utility tunnel beneath the Straits of Mackinac, will meet to discuss past and ongoing exploratory and planning work for the tunnel."
Enbridge is trying hard for selling the propane pipeline tunnel 100 feet below the lakebed to the communities around the Straits of Mackinac.
"Michigan uses more propane than any other state and so Line 5 provides more than half the propane the state uses," says Duffy. "It would take more than 2,100 trucks a day to move all the product that Line 5 carries. It would take more than 800 train cars to carry the product Line 5 carries. And that's not a better alternative, it's not better ... and it's not safe. So, Line 5 is the safest way to move that especially through the U.P. where the roads close in the winter."
The new tunnel would be 30 inch pipe, 100 feet below the lake bed and have foot thick concrete walls
