India’s largest diameter TBM will be used in Mumbai (CRCHI Slurry TBM)
India's largest tunnel boring machine (TBM) is ready. The TBM has been manufactured in China in Changsha by China Railway Construction Heavy Industry (CRCHI). It will be transported to Mumbai from Shanghai.
The Slurry TBM has a diameter of 12.19 metres. It is the biggest ever for India. The machine is 80 metres long and weighs 2,300 tons. It has dual chamber indirect slurry control system, dual circuit automatic pressure system, high-torque and retractable main drive and high-power slurry circulation system.
This TBM will be used for boring a 1,920 metres long tunnel in the new 29.2 kilometres long Mumbai Coastal Road Project.
Why such big investments don't come with joint-manufacture agreements? India has enormous potential for tunnels. Many more tunnels are going to be built.
Should we continue using this potential to support tunnel boring machine industry in China, Australia, Germany? Is this not the right time to start producing Indian TBM?
India is most attractive tunnelling market in potentials. Foreign companies must be told if they want to sell in India they must build in India. This should be a condition in tenders. It will create competition. One company will come forward. Then Indian tunnel boring machine industry can be created.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will begin tunnel boring work for the Mumbai Coastal Road project on January 7.
Chinese-made CRCHI slurry Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) is the largest tunnel boring machine deployed in India.
