Stuttgart Fildertunnel breakthrough achieved.

    Lutz Genscher

Herrenknecht Tunnel Boring Machine of Deutsche Bahn has achieved the breakthrough of the east tube of the 9.5-kilometer-long Filder tunnel. It is the last of the total 4 tubes reaching to the city's future new central station. What is important with this tunnel is that it will shorten the airport ride from almost half an hour to only 8 minutes. Construction of the tunnel started on November 27, 2014.

Fildertunnel is only one of the many tunnels being constructed and others being remodelled. It is part of the ambitious Stuttgart 21 plan. DB's project site  touts S21 project as being the biggest upgrade for public rail transport in state of Baden-Württemberg since the 19th century.

With the project, total of 60 kilometers of new tunnels are being built in addition of three new stations. One of the new stations is the new Central Station. The current historic central station will not be a terminus station anymore but will be integrated to the network as a through station.
