For decades after fall of communism, Romania did not build any tunnels and almost no railways.

Now in Arad county in western Romania, a new tunnel under construction. After the tunnel the pan-European corridor 4 will be able to run at speeds of up to 160 km/h. 45% of the 603 meter long tunnel is finished. Total tunnel will be finished in 2023 per plans.
