A recent survey indicates that a good majority of Ottawa and Gatineau residents want a new tram line connecting the two cities to run in a tunnel under Sparks Street. Residents oppose the over the ground tram line as they think it will not be compatible with the historical atmosphere of city center of Ottawa.
It a tunnel option is selected for the new tramway, it is expected to be around 1.2 kilometers long according to Ottawa Business Journal.
The City of Ottawa Transportation Committee approved a motion on Monday in which the preferred option for the stowage of the Société des Transports de l'Outaouais (STO) tram would pass through a tunnel under the Sparks Street.
