The 7,871 meters long Somport tunnel crosses the Pyrenees from Spain to France with 4,714 meters in Spain and 3,157 meters in France. The single track railway tunnel had been closed to railway traffic after a railway accident in 1970.

Now both countries have made agreement to establish the collaboration mechanisms between both administrations for the execution through a single contract of the studies necessary for the rehabilitation of the Somport railway tunnel, both the Spanish and the French. The purpose is to reopen the international traffic for travelers and goods on the Zaragoza Canfranc-Pau line.
