Norway's international engineering consultancy and design company Multiconsult gets the design work for the E6 Clean Water Tunnel of Oslo's new Water Supply Tunnel.

Multiconsult released the following notice (original press release is in Norwegian):

Multiconsult, with partners Asplan Viak, Kluge and Pacta, earlier this autumn signed the contract «Detailed design of the E6 Clean Water Tunnel» in Ny vannforsyning Oslo (NVO). The work is carried out for the Water and Sewerage Authority (VAV) in Oslo municipality

-The project is incorporated with Ny vannforsyning Oslo (NVO), which we are already working closely with the customer and the partners on. The main grid project includes a lot of rock work and an elevation pool, so this will be very professionally exciting. We are proud of the trust the Water and Sewerage Authority gives us and the other partners, by being able to continue as a contributor to one of municipal Norway's largest investments, says assignment manager for NVO Lars Hjermstad from Multiconsult.

The main grid project will ensure the distribution of treated water from the new water treatment plant at Huseby to Oslo's residents. To achieve this, a tunnel will be built with a tunnel boring machine from Stubberud to Huseby of approx. 11 kilometers. In addition, there is a conventional tunnel from Oset water treatment plant to Disen of around 3.5 kilometers, and conventional tunnels at Disen and Trosterud-Stubberud of the same length. The project has a strong focus on preventing damage to infrastructure, property, nature and the environment.

-The new Clean Water contract complements the geological journey in the Oslo field with tunneling further east in the sedimentary rocks all the way to the bedrock gneiss at Trosterud-Stubberud and north to the syenites at Oset, says object manager for tunnels and rock chambers, Elisabeth Grasbakken from Multiconsult.

    Elevation pool of 50,000 m3
As part of the Stamnett project, an elevation basin of 50,000 m3 in rock will also be projected. There will be a pumping station in the mountains with a capacity of 2500 liters per second, and several valve chambers for connecting water from the tunnels to the main pipeline network in Oslo.

-The pumping station at Stubberud and the new elevation basin will provide further increased security in the water supply to Oslo. With the Stamnett project, we get the opportunity to follow the drinking water's path from source to consumer. For Asplan Viak's part, NVO and the Clean Water Tunnel provide valuable experience with large dimensions and complex solutions. We are proud to work with Norway's largest client in the water and sewerage sector, says Elisabeth Elgsæter who is the object manager for the pumping station from Asplan Viak.

The development project New Water Supply Oslo is now in a hectic period for Multiconsult and the partners COWI and Asplan Viak.

-Project New water supply Oslo is by far Norway's largest and most complicated water and sewerage project, with many different challenges, says Siv Kristin Mellgren, who is the assignment manager for the new Clean Water contract.

As part of New Water Supply to Oslo (NVO), Multiconsult is designing sub-contract 1 Råvann, which consists of an intake arrangement in Holsfjorden and a transfer tunnel to Huseby. Multiconsult also performs subcontract 3, Rock and concrete water treatment plant, and subcontract 4, Technical installations water treatment plant. Sub-contract 3 is performed with COWI as partner and sub-contract 4 with Asplan Viak as partner.

The entire facility will be completed by 1 January 2028.
